ABOUT

Back to the Future: The Timelines Trilogy showcases the original three films with a new twist of aspect ratio, color grading, and some minor visual effects to reflect each time period from the trilogy.

1985 - presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a few minor color changes depending on the timeline

1955 - presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio using an 35mm open matte film scan, expanding the frame instead of losing key parts of it, it is also presented in black in white*

2015 - presented in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio with a touch of darker color grading to reflect the look of films of the modern era

1885 - presented in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio with an orange and darker tint to give the look and feel of the grit of the Eastwood western films of the 1960's

With each time travel sequence in the trilogy, the explosion left behind by the Delorean rips through its aspect ratio and booms with color. Certain objects in the trilogy will also be in color in the 1955 scenes. For example, the McFly picture is always in color throughout the first film, but slowly turns black and white as Marty and his siblings fade from the photo. The lights in the Delorean will also always be in color, with the time circuits glowing red, green, and yellow in 1955. To top off the coloring in the 50s, during the climatic endings of Parts I and II, all lightning glows blue and reflects throughout its scene.

*1955 is presented in a 4:3 format to preserve the integrity of Robert Zemeckis' creative vision.

"There's that word again. Heavy. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?" -Doctor Emmett Brown in Back to the Future, 1985
